Delicately fragrant and beautifully elegant, Freesia Blue Single produces graceful funnel-shaped flowers in rich shades of violet-blue and lavender, carried on arching stems above slender, sword-like foliage.

Originally native to South Africa, Freesias have long been treasured for their exquisite perfume and exceptional cut-flower qualities. The blooms open progressively along each stem, ensuring a long flowering period and making them invaluable for both the garden and the vase. Their sweet citrus fragrance is one of the most distinctive and beloved scents of the summer garden.

The cool blue-violet tones of Blue Single blend beautifully with whites, pinks and silvery foliage plants, creating a fresh and sophisticated display. Perfect for borders, containers, patio pots and cutting gardens, Freesias bring colour, scent and elegance wherever they are planted.

In colder parts of the UK they are best grown in containers and given winter protection, while in milder areas they may survive outdoors in well-drained soils with a protective mulch.

A wonderfully fragrant summer-flowering favourite that no cutting garden should be without.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Freesia corms in spring, once the risk of severe frost has passed and the soil begins to warm.

Where to Plant:
Choose a warm, sunny, sheltered position with fertile, well-drained soil. Freesias are excellent for borders, raised beds, containers and patio pots.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant corms approximately 5 cm (2 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space corms about 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Incorporate compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting. In heavy soils, add grit to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water after planting and keep the soil lightly moist while growth develops. Water regularly during dry spells but avoid waterlogging.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Feed every 2–3 weeks during active growth with a balanced liquid fertiliser.
  • Provide support if growing in exposed positions.
  • Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
  • In colder areas, lift corms before winter and store in a cool, dry, frost-free place.

Top Tip:
Plant Freesias close to paths, doorways or seating areas where their wonderful fragrance can be fully appreciated.
