‘Charlotte’ is a much-loved second early / salad potato, famous for its waxy texture and lovely, slightly nutty flavour. It produces long oval tubers with smooth yellow skins and golden-yellow flesh, making it ideal for boiling, steaming and salads where the potatoes hold their shape beautifully. A reliable cropper for UK gardens and allotments, ‘Charlotte’ is also a great choice for large containers and grow bags.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

For best results, chit (sprout) seed potatoes in a cool, bright place from February. Plant outdoors from March to April when the soil is workable and the risk of hard frost is reducing.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Potatoes crop best in open ground, raised beds or large containers/grow bags. Rotate where you grow potatoes each year to help reduce pests and diseases.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant tubers at around 10–15 cm deep with the shoots (chits) facing upwards.
  • Spacing: Space tubers about 30 cm apart with 60 cm between rows.
  • Soil Prep: Dig in well-rotted compost before planting. Avoid very fresh manure as it can encourage scab.

Watering:
Water after planting if the soil is very dry. Once growth is underway, keep plants evenly watered during dry spells, especially as tubers form.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Earth up stems as they grow by drawing soil up around the shoots to protect developing tubers from light.
  • In frosty weather, protect young shoots with horticultural fleece or extra soil.
  • Keep weed-free and ensure good airflow for healthier plants.
  • Harvest once plants have flowered and tubers are a usable size—leave a little longer for larger “salad” tubers.

Top Tip:
‘Charlotte’ is at its best as a waxy salad potato—harvest when tubers are medium-sized for the best texture, and avoid overcooking to keep them firm.
