‘Duke of York’ is a classic first early seed potato and a real favourite for that first taste of the season. It produces smooth, red-skinned tubers with creamy white flesh and a lovely traditional flavour—perfect boiled as new potatoes, served with butter and herbs, or used in warm salads. Quick to crop and ideal for UK gardens, it’s a great choice for beds, allotments, and even large containers for an extra-early harvest.
When to Plant:
For best results, chit (sprout) seed potatoes in a cool, bright place from February. Plant outdoors from March onwards when the soil is workable and the risk of hard frost is reducing.
Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Potatoes crop best in open ground, raised beds or large containers/grow bags. Avoid planting potatoes in the same spot every year—rotate crops to reduce disease.
How to Plant:
Watering:
Water after planting if the soil is very dry. Once growth is underway, keep plants evenly watered during dry spells, especially as tubers form.
Aftercare Tips:
Top Tip:
For the earliest crop, grow ‘Duke of York’ in large pots or grow bags and keep them in a sheltered spot. Start earthing up with compost as shoots appear to maximise yields.
