Imperata

Imperata, most commonly sold as Imperata cylindrica ‘Red Baron’, is a striking ornamental grass grown for its bold, fiery colour. Fresh green blades emerge in spring and gradually flame to deep red and burgundy from the tips down, creating a dramatic, glowing effect through summer and into autumn. It’s perfect for adding contrast and structure in modern borders, gravel gardens and containers, and it looks especially effective planted in groups or paired with silver foliage, purple flowers, and airy grasses.

Imperata prefers a sunny spot for the best colouring and grows into neat, upright clumps that are easy to care for. It’s ideal if you want a plant that brings strong colour without flowers — just clean, architectural impact.
