‘Pentland Javelin’ is a very reliable first early seed potato, prized for its quick cropping and great flavour. It produces smooth, oval tubers with white skins and white flesh, making it a fantastic choice for classic new potatoes, boiling, steaming and warm salads. It’s ideal for UK gardens and allotments, and because it’s an early variety it’s a great way to enjoy a harvest before many common potato problems build later in the season.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

For best results, chit (sprout) seed potatoes in a cool, bright place from February. Plant outdoors from March onwards when the soil is workable and the risk of hard frost is reducing.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Potatoes crop best in open ground, raised beds or large containers/grow bags. Rotate where you grow potatoes each year to reduce the risk of pests and diseases.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant tubers at around 10–15 cm deep with the shoots (chits) facing upwards.
  • Spacing: Space tubers about 30 cm apart with 60 cm between rows.
  • Soil Prep: Dig in well-rotted compost before planting. Avoid very fresh manure as it can encourage scab.

Watering:
Water after planting if the soil is very dry. Once growth is underway, keep plants evenly watered during dry spells, especially as tubers form.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Earth up stems as they grow by drawing soil up around the shoots to protect developing tubers from light.
  • In frosty weather, protect young shoots with horticultural fleece or extra soil.
  • Keep weed-free and ensure good airflow for healthier plants.
  • Harvest as new potatoes once plants have flowered and tubers are a usable size.

Top Tip:
For an early crop, grow ‘Pentland Javelin’ in large pots or grow bags in a sheltered spot. Start earthing up with compost as the shoots appear to maximise yields and keep tubers covered.
