Onion ‘Sturon’ is a well-known, dependable variety that produces firm, round bulbs with a classic, full onion flavour. It’s a great choice for UK gardens and allotments thanks to its reliable cropping and excellent keeping quality once cured. Perfect for everyday cooking, ‘Sturon’ is ideal for roasting, soups, stews, sauces and caramelising.
When to Plant:
Plant onion sets in spring (typically March to April) when the soil is workable. In milder areas, you can also plant in autumn for an earlier crop, as long as conditions are not waterlogged.
Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny, open position with fertile, well-drained soil. Onions prefer soil that isn’t too rich in fresh manure and do best where ground is not waterlogged. Ideal for vegetable beds, raised beds and allotments.
How to Plant:
Watering:
Water after planting if the soil is dry. Once growing well, onions need little watering, but do water during prolonged dry spells. Reduce watering as bulbs swell to help them ripen.
Aftercare Tips:
Top Tip:
Plant sets firmly so birds can’t pull them out. For the longest storage, cure harvested onions in a warm, airy place until the skins rustle and the necks are fully dry.
