Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring or autumn when the soil is workable. Avoid planting during periods of hard frost or into waterlogged soil.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny, open position with well-drained soil. This collection is ideal for wildlife-friendly borders, cottage gardens, prairie planting and pollinator-focused garden schemes.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant so the top of each rootball sits level with the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space plants approximately 40–60 cm (16–24 inches) apart depending on variety.
  • Soil Prep: Improve soil with garden compost. In heavier soils, add grit or sharp sand to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil lightly moist while plants establish. Once established, many of these perennials are relatively drought tolerant, requiring only occasional watering during prolonged dry periods.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead regularly to encourage continued flowering throughout summer.
  • Leave some seed heads in autumn to provide food and shelter for wildlife.
  • Cut back faded stems in late autumn or early spring.

Top Tip:
Plant in generous drifts and mix flower shapes and colours together to attract a wider variety of bees and butterflies throughout the season.
