Echinacea ‘Sombrero Lemon’ is a brilliantly uplifting coneflower with zesty lemon-yellow blooms that shine from midsummer well into autumn. Each flower has a bold central cone surrounded by bright petals, creating a fresh, modern look that works beautifully in prairie-style planting, mixed borders and wildlife-friendly gardens. The flowers are loved by bees and butterflies, and as the seed heads mature they can also attract birds—so it’s a real all-rounder for a lively garden.

Supplied in a 2 litre pot, ‘Sombrero Lemon’ is a strong, well-established plant that will settle in quickly and come back bigger and better each year. It also makes a fantastic cut flower, and the seed heads look great left standing for winter interest.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring or autumn, while the soil is moist and workable. Container-grown plants can be planted at most times of year, but avoid frozen or waterlogged ground.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with well-drained soil. Echinacea thrives in mixed borders, prairie-style planting and wildlife-friendly gardens. Once established it is fairly drought tolerant, but it flowers best with plenty of sun and free-draining ground.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant at the same depth as in the pot, with the crown level with the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space 35–45 cm (14–18 inches) apart to allow plants to bulk up and improve airflow.
  • Soil Prep: Mix in a little compost to help the plant establish. Avoid overly rich soil, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep watered during the first growing season while roots establish. After that, water only during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead regularly to encourage more blooms.
  • Leave some seed heads to mature for birds and winter interest.
  • Cut back stems in late winter or early spring before new growth starts.
  • Divide clumps every 3–4 years if needed to maintain vigour.

Top Tip:
Echinacea ‘Sombrero Lemon’ looks fantastic with ornamental grasses and purple companions like Salvias or Verbena—the lemon-yellow flowers really pop in a prairie-style border.
