Rich, colourful and constantly changing through the seasons, Heuchera 'Berry Smoothie' is a superb foliage perennial that provides interest for much of the year. Its large, gently lobed leaves emerge in spring in glowing shades of metallic rose-pink and raspberry, beautifully picked out by darker red veining.

As the season progresses, the foliage gradually deepens through purple-pink and berry tones into rich burgundy and wine-red, giving the plant an ever-changing appearance. This wonderful seasonal transformation makes 'Berry Smoothie' particularly valuable for adding long-lasting colour to borders and containers, even when little else is in flower.

During June and July, slender stems rise above the colourful mound of foliage carrying delicate sprays of creamy-white flowers. The light, airy blooms contrast beautifully with the darker leaves and are attractive to visiting pollinators.

Hardy and generally evergreen to semi-evergreen in the UK, 'Berry Smoothie' is wonderfully versatile. It performs particularly well in partial or dappled shade, but can also be grown in sunnier positions provided the soil remains reasonably moist. It is excellent for the front of borders, woodland-style planting, path edging and patio containers.

For a fabulous foliage combination, pair the raspberry tones of 'Berry Smoothie' with fresh lime-green varieties such as Heuchera 'Apple Crisp' – the contrast is superb.

Supplied as a well-established 2 litre potted plant, ready for planting into the garden or a container.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Heuchera 'Berry Smoothie' can be planted from spring through to autumn, provided the ground is not frozen, waterlogged or exceptionally dry. As a 2 litre potted plant, it already has an established root system and can begin settling into its new position soon after planting.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in partial or dappled shade for an easy, reliable display. 'Berry Smoothie' can also tolerate more sun provided the soil remains reasonably moist, although protection from the strongest afternoon sunshine is beneficial. Plant in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. It is ideal for the front of borders, woodland-style planting, path edging and patio containers.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Dig a hole approximately twice the width of the pot and plant with the top of the rootball and crown level with the surrounding soil. Avoid burying the crown too deeply.
  • Spacing: Allow approximately 40–50cm (16–20 inches) between plants.
  • Soil Prep: Incorporate garden compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting. On heavy soils, add horticultural grit to improve drainage.
  • Containers: Plant in a good-quality, free-draining multipurpose compost and ensure the container has adequate drainage holes.

Watering:
Water thoroughly immediately after planting and continue watering regularly while the plant establishes. Keep the soil reasonably moist during prolonged dry periods, particularly if planted in a sunny position or grown in a container. Avoid allowing the roots to remain waterlogged.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove tired or damaged foliage in early spring as fresh new leaves begin to emerge.
  • Cut away faded flower stems after flowering to keep the plant looking neat.
  • Apply a light mulch of compost or organic matter in spring, taking care not to bury the crown.
  • Divide established plants every few years if the clump becomes congested or woody.
  • Older Heucheras can gradually develop a raised crown, so lift and replant them at the correct depth if necessary.

Top Tip:
Combine 'Berry Smoothie' with a bright lime-green Heuchera such as 'Apple Crisp'. The contrast between raspberry-pink and fresh apple-green foliage creates an eye-catching display that lasts far longer than flowers alone.
