A true garden classic, Heuchera 'Palace Purple' is a handsome foliage perennial renowned for its rich metallic bronze-purple to deep burgundy leaves. The broad, attractively lobed foliage has a subtle glossy sheen, creating a wonderful depth of colour that provides interest for much of the year.
The foliage changes subtly with the seasons and growing conditions, developing shades of mahogany, bronze, burgundy and dark purple. Good light helps intensify the colouring, although 'Palace Purple' is wonderfully versatile and performs equally well in partial or dappled shade.
From early summer, slender wiry stems rise above the foliage carrying airy sprays of tiny pale pink to creamy-white flowers. These delicate blooms provide a lovely contrast against the dark leaves and are attractive to bees and other visiting pollinators.
Hardy and generally semi-evergreen in UK gardens, 'Palace Purple' is an extremely useful plant for the front of borders, woodland-style planting, path edging and patio containers. Its dark foliage is particularly effective alongside lime and apple-green plants, silver foliage and pale flowers.
For a striking Heuchera combination, plant 'Palace Purple' alongside 'Apple Crisp' and 'Berry Smoothie'. Together, their deep burgundy, fresh apple-green and raspberry-pink foliage creates a colourful display that lasts well beyond the flowering season.
Supplied as a well-established 2 litre potted plant, ready for planting into the garden or a container.
When to Plant:
Heuchera 'Palace Purple' can be planted from spring through to autumn, provided the ground is not frozen, waterlogged or exceptionally dry. As a 2 litre potted plant, it already has an established root system and can begin settling into its new position soon after planting.
Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun, partial shade or dappled shade. Good light can help intensify the rich bronze-purple foliage, although some protection from intense afternoon sun is beneficial in hotter, drier positions. Plant in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. It is ideal for the front of borders, woodland-style planting, path edging and patio containers.
How to Plant:
Watering:
Water thoroughly immediately after planting and continue watering regularly while the plant establishes. Keep the soil reasonably moist during prolonged dry periods, particularly when growing in containers or a sunny position, but avoid leaving the roots sitting in waterlogged soil.
