Verbena bonariensis is the definition of “effortless elegance” in the garden. Tall, slender stems carry airy clusters of tiny lilac-purple flowers, creating that much-loved see-through height that adds movement without blocking the view of other plants. It flowers for months from summer into autumn, and it’s a standout for bees and butterflies, making it a brilliant choice for wildlife-friendly borders.

It’s perfect for naturalistic and cottage-style planting, looks fantastic threaded through ornamental grasses, and often self-seeds gently in the right spot (free extras, if you’re lucky!). 

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring or autumn, while the soil is moist and workable. In colder or wetter gardens, spring planting is often best.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with moist but well-drained soil. Verbena bonariensis thrives in warmth and light, and is ideal for mixed borders, naturalistic planting, gravel gardens (with occasional watering), and pots and containers. Good drainage helps it overwinter, especially in heavy soils.

How to Plant:

• Depth: Plant so the top of the compost is level with the soil surface.
• Spacing: Space plants around 45–60 cm apart to allow airy clumps to develop.
• Soil Prep: Mix in garden compost to help retain moisture, and add horticultural grit if drainage is poor.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep watering during the first season while it establishes. Once established it copes with drier spells, but it flowers best with occasional watering during prolonged dry weather (especially in pots).

Aftercare Tips:

• Leave stems and seedheads over winter for winter interest and to encourage self-seeding, then cut back in early spring before new growth starts.
• Mulch in spring with compost or well-rotted organic matter to help conserve moisture and feed the soil.
• If your garden is cold, wet or exposed, give plants a dry winter mulch to protect the crown.

Top Tip:
For the best “floating flowers” effect, plant Verbena bonariensis in small drifts and thread it through ornamental grasses, Rudbeckia, Salvias and sedums. It’s an easy way to add height, movement and pollinator power.
