A truly outstanding modern Camassia, Camassia 'Blue Heaven' produces tall, elegant spires packed with large star-shaped flowers in beautiful shades of clear sky-blue and lavender-blue.

Flowering in late spring and early summer, this award-worthy variety creates a spectacular display as the flowers gradually open from the base of the spike upwards, extending the flowering season for several weeks. The delicate blooms are held above neat clumps of strap-like green foliage, bringing height, movement and a natural grace to borders and meadow-style plantings.

Camassias originate from the damp meadows of North America and are among the most useful spring-flowering bulbs for moisture-retentive soils. Unlike many bulbs that prefer dry conditions, 'Blue Heaven' thrives in fertile soils that remain reasonably moist during spring, making it invaluable for areas where tulips and alliums may struggle.

The elegant blue flowers are highly attractive to bees and other pollinating insects and combine beautifully with ornamental grasses, alliums, irises and late spring perennials. Over time, the bulbs form increasingly impressive clumps, returning year after year with very little attention.

A superb choice for naturalistic planting schemes, cottage gardens and wildlife-friendly borders.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Camassia bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, while the soil remains warm and workable.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Camassias are ideal for borders, meadows and areas that remain reliably moist during spring.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve soil with compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting to help retain moisture and improve fertility.

Watering:
Water after planting and during prolonged dry spells in spring. Camassias appreciate moisture while actively growing and flowering.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
  • Apply a mulch of compost or organic matter each autumn.
  • Leave established clumps undisturbed for many years for the best displays.

Top Tip:
Plant in generous groups for a breathtaking display of blue flower spikes that will return reliably year after year.
