Fritillaria uva-vulpis

Charming, understated and full of character, Fritillaria uva-vulpis, commonly known as the Fox's Grape Fritillary, produces elegant nodding bell-shaped flowers in rich chocolate-purple with striking golden-yellow tips.

Native to the mountain meadows and woodland edges of Turkey and western Asia, this delightful species brings a natural grace to the spring garden. The slender stems carry several small flowers, each displaying a beautiful contrast between the deep mahogany-purple outer petals and the bright yellow interior and margins.

Unlike the larger and more dramatic Crown Imperials, Fritillaria uva-vulpis offers a more delicate and refined beauty, making it perfect for the front of borders, rock gardens, woodland plantings and naturalistic displays. Its compact size allows it to mingle beautifully amongst other spring bulbs, where its unusual colouring rewards closer inspection.

This species is particularly valuable for naturalising, gradually forming attractive clumps in well-drained soil. Easy to grow and remarkably reliable, it returns year after year, bringing a touch of botanical elegance to the spring garden.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Fritillaria uva-vulpis bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, while the soil remains workable.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. Ideal for rock gardens, woodland edges, alpine beds and the front of borders.

How to Plant:

• Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
• Spacing: Space bulbs about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
• Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit or sharp sand to ensure good drainage. Incorporate compost or organic matter before planting.

Watering:
Water after planting to settle the soil. Once established, water only during prolonged dry periods.

Aftercare Tips:

• Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
• Avoid disturbing established clumps wherever possible.
• Apply a light mulch of compost annually to maintain soil fertility.

Top Tip:
Plant amongst dwarf narcissus, species tulips and Anemone blanda for a charming and natural spring display.
