A truly elegant and distinctive form of Lily-of-the-Valley, Convallaria majalis 'Hofheim' is treasured for its beautifully variegated foliage, featuring broad green leaves edged and streaked with creamy-yellow markings that brighten even the shadiest corners of the garden.

In late spring, arching stems carry clusters of the classic pure white, bell-shaped flowers for which Lily-of-the-Valley is famous. The blooms release an exquisite sweet fragrance that drifts through the garden and has made Convallaria one of the most beloved woodland plants for generations.

Originally selected in Germany, 'Hofheim' is valued as much for its foliage as for its flowers. The attractive variegation provides season-long interest, making it particularly useful for illuminating woodland gardens, shaded borders and areas beneath trees and shrubs. Even when not in flower, the foliage creates an attractive groundcover that contrasts beautifully with ferns, hostas and other shade-loving perennials.

Over time, plants gradually spread to form elegant colonies, creating a refined and natural woodland effect. Reliable, long-lived and wonderfully easy to grow, 'Hofheim' is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking both fragrance and foliage interest.

A beautiful woodland perennial that combines scent, elegance and year-round appeal.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Convallaria pips or crowns in autumn, winter or early spring while dormant. Plant as soon as possible after receipt for best establishment.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in partial shade or full shade with moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Ideal beneath trees, in woodland gardens and along shaded borders.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant pips so the growing tip sits just below or level with the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space plants approximately 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve soil with plenty of compost, leaf mould or well-rotted organic matter before planting.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil lightly moist during establishment. Convallaria prefers cool, moisture-retentive soil and should not be allowed to dry out completely.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Apply an annual mulch of compost or leaf mould.
  • Allow foliage to die back naturally in autumn.
  • Established clumps can be divided every few years if required.

Top Tip:
Plant where the attractive variegated foliage can brighten shady areas throughout the growing season, even after flowering has finished.
