For a calm, elegant splash of winter colour, our Azalea simsii ‘White (Pure)’ is a beautiful choice. Neatly grown in a 12cm ceramic pot, it arrives already in bud or bloom, smothered in pure white flowers that look as if they’ve been arranged by a florist.

These indoor azaleas bring a soft, luminous quality to the room just when the days are at their darkest. The crisp white blooms sit perfectly against the glossy, deep green foliage, making this a wonderfully versatile plant – equally at home on a windowsill, side table, mantelpiece or as a welcoming accent in a hallway.

Use a single plant for a simple, serene statement, or group several together for a luxurious display. The compact habit suits smaller spaces, and the smart ceramic pot means it’s ready to place and enjoy the moment it arrives.

With a little care to keep it cool and evenly moist, Azalea simsii ‘White (Pure)’ will provide week after week of flower, making it an ideal seasonal gift or a treat to brighten your own home through the winter months.

Planting Instructions

Position & Light

  • Best grown indoors as a seasonal houseplant.
  • Choose a bright spot with indirect light – a north- or east-facing windowsill, or a light room out of harsh midday sun.
  • Avoid very dark corners (flowering will be reduced) and hot, south-facing windows in full sun.

Temperature

  • Azalea simsii prefers things a little cooler than most houseplants:
    • Ideal temperature range: 10–18°C.
  • Keep away from radiators, open fires, wood burners and very warm, dry rooms, which will shorten the flowering period.
  • A cool porch, conservatory or bright hallway is often perfect.

Watering

  • These azaleas dislike drying out completely.
  • Keep the compost consistently moist but not waterlogged:
    • Check with a finger; water when the surface feels just dry.
    • Allow excess water to drain away and do not leave the pot standing in water.
  • If possible, use rainwater or softened, low-lime water, as azaleas are acid-loving plants. In hard-water areas, occasional rainwater is especially helpful.

Humidity

  • Azaleas appreciate a touch of extra humidity:
    • Stand the pot on a tray of pebbles with water below the base (not touching the compost) to gently raise moisture around the plant.
    • In very dry rooms, you can lightly mist the air around (not directly onto) the flowers.

Feeding

  • While in full flower, feeding can be light – they don’t require heavy fertiliser to perform well.
  • After flowering, once new growth starts, you can feed every 3–4 weeks with a liquid fertiliser for acid-loving plants (for azaleas or rhododendrons) during the growing season.

Flowering Time & Height

  • Supplied in bud or bloom for an almost instant display.
  • Flowering can last several weeks, especially if the plant is kept cool and evenly moist.
  • Plants usually reach around 25–35 cm (10–14") in height, depending on variety and growing conditions.

After Flowering – What Next?

  • Deadhead by gently removing faded blooms to keep the plant looking neat.
  • Keep it in good light, with the compost moist and occasional feeding, to help it recover and grow on.
  • In late spring and summer, the plant can be moved outside to a shaded, sheltered spot, protected from scorching midday sun, while you continue to keep it moist and feed now and then with an ericaceous fertiliser.
  • Azalea simsii is not fully hardy in most areas; bring it back indoors to a cool, frost-free place before autumn’s cold nights arrive. With suitable care, reflowering is possible, though it is often enjoyed primarily as a seasonal indoor plant.

Safety

  • As with many ornamental plants, indoor azaleas are not edible.
  • Keep out of reach of pets and small children who might be tempted to nibble the leaves or flowers.
