An elegant classic and one of the finest early-flowering snowdrops, Galanthus 'Atkinsii' has been delighting gardeners since the 1870s. Renowned for its vigour, graceful form and delicate honey fragrance, this distinguished cultivar remains a favourite among both collectors and those simply seeking reliable late winter colour.

The large, nodding white flowers are carried on sturdy stems above distinctive blue-grey foliage. Each bloom features long, pear-shaped outer petals surrounding shorter inner petals, beautifully marked with a striking heart-shaped green marking. The refined shape of the flowers gives 'Atkinsii' a graceful, almost jewellery-like appearance, making it one of the most elegant snowdrops in cultivation.

Flowering from late winter into early spring, 'Atkinsii' is often among the first snowdrops to bloom, providing an invaluable source of nectar for bees on mild winter days. Over time, it naturalises readily beneath deciduous trees, woodland edges and shady borders, gradually forming impressive drifts that become more beautiful each year.

Recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit (AGM), Galanthus 'Atkinsii' is exceptionally hardy, vigorous and dependable—an outstanding choice for every spring garden.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Galanthus bulbs in autumn (September–November), or plant "in the green" immediately after flowering in late winter or early spring for the quickest establishment.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in partial shade or dappled woodland shade with moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil. 'Atkinsii' is ideal beneath deciduous trees, woodland gardens, shady borders and naturalised lawns.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs around 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve the planting area with leaf mould, compost or well-rotted organic matter to retain moisture while maintaining good drainage.

Watering:
Water after planting if the soil is dry. Once established, rainfall is usually sufficient, although snowdrops appreciate moist soil during their growing season.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering to replenish the bulbs.
  • Lift and divide overcrowded clumps every 4–5 years after flowering if required.
  • Apply an annual mulch of leaf mould or compost to encourage healthy growth.

Top Tip:
Plant 'Atkinsii' in generous drifts where its elegant flowers and blue-grey foliage can be admired close to paths, woodland walks or beneath deciduous trees.
