A truly magnificent ornamental allium, Allium ‘Ambassador’ produces large, perfectly rounded globes of rich violet-purple flowers held high on strong, sturdy stems.

Each flower head is made up of hundreds of tiny star-shaped florets, forming a dense, architectural sphere that creates a bold and elegant statement in the garden. Flowering in early summer, it provides height, structure and colour just as spring bulbs begin to fade.

Its tall stems make it ideal for planting towards the middle or back of borders, where it rises beautifully above surrounding planting. It also combines exceptionally well with grasses and perennials, adding contrast and movement to naturalistic planting schemes.

Highly attractive to bees and pollinators, Allium ‘Ambassador’ is also excellent for cutting, and its seed heads can be left in place to provide lasting interest well into late summer.

Easy to grow and reliably perennial, this standout variety is perfect for gardeners looking to create a dramatic, high-impact display with minimal effort.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Allium bulbs in autumn (September–November) before the ground freezes. This allows roots to establish for strong flowering the following year.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with well-drained soil. Alliums perform best in borders, gravel gardens and naturalistic planting schemes. Avoid areas where soil remains wet over winter.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs about 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 20–25 cm (8–10 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve soil with compost. In heavier soils, add grit to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water after planting. Once established, Alliums require very little additional watering unless conditions are particularly dry.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering to feed the bulb.
  • Deadhead if desired, or leave seed heads for ornamental interest.
  • Avoid excessive moisture in winter to prevent bulb rot.

Top Tip:
Plant in groups for maximum impact – the large purple globes look especially striking rising above softer planting such as ornamental grasses.
