Lilium ‘Hachi’ is a proper “stop-you-in-your-tracks” Oriental lily, producing huge, star-shaped blooms in creamy white with a bold, deep red/maroon central stripe. As the flowers open, they bring that classic Oriental lily fragrance—rich, sweet and unmistakably summery—making it a fantastic choice near patios, paths and seating areas where you’ll actually enjoy the scent.

It’s also a brilliant value plant: each bulb can produce multiple flowers per stem, and once established it will return year after year, building into a stronger display. ‘Hachi’ adds height and drama to borders (without looking bulky), and it’s equally happy in a large, deep pot for instant impact on the patio. The blooms are excellent for cutting too—perfect for a statement vase indoors.

A few useful facts:

  • Oriental lilies are grown for their big blooms and strong fragrance (often strongest in the evening).
  • They prefer free-draining soil—bulbs dislike sitting wet, especially in winter.
  • Important: Lilies are highly toxic to cats if ingested (pollen, leaves, flowers). Keep out of reach if you have cats.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant lily bulbs in spring once the soil is workable, or in autumn in milder areas. Avoid planting when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny to partially shaded position with fertile, well-drained soil. Lilium performs best in a sheltered spot where tall stems won’t be buffeted by wind. Ideal for mixed borders, cutting gardens, and large containers.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs around 15–20 cm deep (roughly 2–3 times the bulb’s height), with the point facing up.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs 25–30 cm apart, or plant in small groups for the best display.
  • Soil Prep: Work in compost for fertility and drainage. In heavy soils, add horticultural grit so bulbs don’t sit wet.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep soil evenly moist while shoots are growing, but never waterlog. Water pots more regularly in summer, as compost dries out faster.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Provide discreet support in exposed positions.
  • Deadhead spent blooms, but leave stems and leaves to die back naturally—this feeds the bulb for next year.
  • Once foliage has yellowed, cut back to ground level.
  • In winter, ensure bulbs/pots have excellent drainage to prevent rot.

Top Tip:
For longer vase life, cut stems when the first buds are just opening, and gently remove the pollen-bearing anthers to prevent staining.
