Agapanthus ‘Alan Street’ is a truly outstanding, deep-blue variety with real story and heritage behind it. It’s a beautiful dark-flowered seedling that was identified and named for Alan, the late Head Nurseryman from when the nuresery was down in Somerset, and it has been a firm favourite ever since it was first listed in 2013. The flowers are a striking near-indigo blue, produced in profusion on dark stems, with flowerheads that aren’t too tightly packed—so you can really appreciate the individual starry blooms as they open. An architectural, dramatic plant that looks equally at home in borders or containers, and brings rich colour at the height of summer.
This variety was also one of the very best performers in the RHS Wisley Agapanthus trial, where it was awarded an AGM (Award of Garden Merit) in 2019—a strong sign of reliability and garden worthiness. The foliage is deciduous, dying back for winter and re-emerging fresh in spring. Supplied from divisions.
When to Plant:
Plant from divisions / bare roots in spring once the risk of hard frost has passed, or in early autumn while the soil is still warm and workable. Avoid planting when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.
Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position for the best flowering. Plant into well-drained soil that holds some moisture in summer. Agapanthus dislike sitting cold and wet in winter, so drainage is essential. Ideal for mixed borders, gravel gardens, coastal-style planting, and containers.
How to Plant:
Watering:
Water well after planting and keep soil evenly moist while establishing. Once established, agapanthus are resilient, but they flower best with occasional watering during prolonged dry spells.

Agapanthus ‘Alan Street’ is superb in pots—and slightly “snug” roots can help encourage flowering. Place containers in the sunniest spot you have and protect from winter wet.
