Agapanthus ‘Blue Rinse’ is a striking African Lily with rounded heads of rich blue, trumpet-shaped flowers held on tall, sturdy stems above neat, strap-like green foliage. Flowering through summer, it adds bold structure and a glamorous, architectural feel to borders and large patio pots. Agapanthus is also great for pollinators, and the flowers are excellent for cutting. Once established it’s drought tolerant, but it flowers best with sunshine and free-draining soil.
When to Plant:
Plant bare roots in spring once the risk of hard frost has passed. In milder areas, you can also plant in early autumn so roots can settle before winter.
Where to Plant:
Choose a warm, sunny, sheltered position with well-drained soil. Agapanthus thrives in borders or large pots and is ideal for patio containers, sunny borders and gravel gardens. Avoid cold, waterlogged ground in winter.
How to Plant:
Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep evenly moist while establishing, then water only during prolonged dry spells. In pots, water regularly in summer, allowing excess to drain away.
Aftercare Tips:
Top Tip:
Agapanthus flowers best when slightly restricted, so it’s excellent in pots. For extra winter safety, keep container plants on pot feet and in a sheltered position so the compost never stays soggy.
