Anemone ‘Lord Lieutenant’ is a real showstopper, producing large, velvety blooms in rich deep violet-blue with a striking dark centre. The flowers have a bold, almost poppy-like look and sit on strong stems above fresh green foliage, making them perfect for brightening borders, filling patio pots, and—best of all—cutting for the vase. Plant in spring and you’ll be rewarded with a vibrant display in late spring to early summer, with plenty of repeat blooms if you keep deadheading.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring as soon as the soil is workable. For best results, soak the tubers in lukewarm water for 2–4 hours before planting to help them sprout more quickly.

Where to Plant:
Choose a spot in full sun (or light shade) with well-drained soil. Anemone ‘Lord Lieutenant’ is ideal for mixed borders, cutting gardens, containers and patio pots. They prefer a sheltered position and soil that doesn’t stay wet for long periods.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant tubers about 5 cm (2 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit to ensure good drainage. A little compost is fine, but avoid waterlogged ground.

Watering:
Water after planting to settle the soil. Keep the soil lightly moist while shoots appear, then water during dry spells while the plants are growing and flowering.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead regularly to encourage more flowers.
  • Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering to feed the tubers for next year.
  • In colder or wetter areas, consider growing in pots so tubers can be kept drier over winter.

Top Tip:
For the best cut flowers, pick stems when buds are coloured and just starting to open. Plant Anemone ‘Lord Lieutenant’ in groups for maximum impact—that deep blue looks incredible against whites and soft pinks.
