Astilbe ‘Spotlight’ is a brilliant choice for adding colour and texture to shadier borders. It produces elegant, feathery flower plumes in soft pink tones above fresh, fern-like foliage, creating a light, airy look that lifts planting schemes beautifully. It’s ideal for woodland-style gardens, mixed borders, and anywhere the soil stays reliably moist—especially near ponds and streams. Astilbes also make lovely cut stems, and even when not in flower the foliage gives a lush, leafy feel through summer.
If you’ve got a slightly shaded spot that needs a little “wow” without being high maintenance, ‘Spotlight’ is a great pick.
When to Plant:
Plant in spring or autumn, while the soil is moist and workable. Container-grown plants can be planted at most times of year, avoiding frozen or waterlogged conditions.
Where to Plant:
Choose a position in partial shade (or light sun if the soil stays reliably moist) with moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Astilbe is ideal for shady borders, woodland planting, along streams or ponds, and moist mixed borders. Avoid hot, baking sun and very dry soil.
How to Plant:
Watering:
Water well after planting and keep the soil consistently moist, especially in the first season and during dry spells. Astilbes do not like drying out.
Aftercare Tips:
Top Tip:
