Crocosmia ‘Buttercups’ is a bright and cheerful summer-flowering favourite, producing sprays of buttery yellow blooms on arching stems above neat, sword-like foliage. It adds a warm pop of colour to borders just when the garden is in full swing, and it’s brilliant for creating that relaxed, cottage-garden feel. Crocosmias are also fantastic for pollinators, and the flowers make excellent cut stems—perfect for adding a splash of sunshine indoors.

Once established, Crocosmia is easy and reliable, forming clumps that return year after year and gradually bulk up to give an even better display.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Crocosmia corms in spring once the soil starts to warm. Avoid planting into frozen or waterlogged ground.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with well-drained soil. Crocosmia is ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens and wildlife-friendly planting. In colder or exposed areas, a warm, sheltered spot helps it perform at its best.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant corms about 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space corms 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart. Plant in groups for the best display.
  • Soil Prep: Improve soil with a little compost. In heavy soil, add grit to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water after planting and keep lightly moist while shoots appear. Once growing, Crocosmia is fairly tolerant, but will flower best with water during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead spent blooms to keep plants tidy.
  • Leave foliage in place after flowering until it yellows naturally—this feeds the corms for next year.
  • In autumn, mulch clumps in colder areas for winter protection.
  • Divide congested clumps every 3–4 years in spring to maintain vigour.

Top Tip:
Crocosmia ‘Buttercups’ looks best planted in drifts. Pair it with ornamental grasses, Rudbeckias or Salvias for a sunny, late-summer border full of movement and colour.
