Lavender ‘Lusi Purple’ is a real summer favourite, bursting with richly coloured, deep purple flower spikes held proudly above fragrant, silvery-green foliage. Compact, tidy and wonderfully free-flowering, it’s ideal for edging paths, growing in pots, or weaving through sunny borders where you’ll brush past it and release that unmistakable lavender scent.

As well as looking gorgeous, lavender is famously hardworking: it’s drought tolerant once established, thrives in poor soils, and is one of the best plants you can grow for pollinators—bees in particular will absolutely flock to it. The flowers are also great for cutting and drying, perfect for posies, wreaths, or to pop in drawers and wardrobes for a natural, fresh fragrance. Plant a few together and you’ll create a little “purple haze” that brings instant Mediterranean charm to the garden.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring or early autumn, while the soil is warming (spring) or still warm (early autumn). Avoid planting in winter when soils are cold and wet.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position in well-drained soil. Lavender loves a bright, open spot and prefers soil that doesn’t stay wet. It’s ideal for pots and containers, path edging, gravel gardens, herb beds, and sunny borders. In heavier soils, improve drainage with grit or plant on a slight mound.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant at the same depth as in the pot, with the top of the compost level with the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart depending on the look you want (closer for a fuller hedge effect).
  • Soil Prep: Keep soil relatively lean—avoid rich manure. If drainage is poor, mix in horticultural grit or plant into a raised area.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Once established, lavender is drought tolerant and only needs watering during prolonged dry spells. In pots, water when the compost is dry, but never let it sit waterlogged.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Trim after flowering to keep plants compact and bushy (avoid cutting into old woody stems).
  • Remove faded flower stems and lightly shape the plant in late summer.
  • In very cold or wet areas, ensure excellent drainage to help plants overwinter successfully.

Top Tip:
For the best colour and fragrance, lavender needs as much sun as you can give it. Plant near paths, patios or doorways so you can enjoy the scent, and let the flowers mature for cutting and drying.
