Lilium ‘Arabian Knight’ is a real statement lily—tall, dramatic and packed with richly coloured blooms in deep red to maroon tones, often flecked or shaded for an exotic, “velvet” look. It’s a fabulous choice if you want height and wow-factor in summer borders, and it’s equally brilliant in large patio pots where you can enjoy the flowers up close. Like many lilies, it also makes a superb cut flower, giving you long-lasting stems that instantly lift a vase arrangement.

As well as its looks, ‘Arabian Knight’ is great for adding structure without taking up much ground space—perfect for slotting between perennials. Plant it in groups for maximum impact and pair with softer colours (whites, pale pinks, silvers) or ornamental grasses to make those dark blooms really stand out.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant lily bulbs in autumn or spring, when the soil is moist and workable. Avoid planting when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or light shade with well-drained, fertile soil. Lilies prefer their heads in the sun and their roots cool—ideal for borders, cutting gardens, and large containers. If planting in pots, ensure excellent drainage.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs around 15 cm (6 inches) deep, or roughly 3 times the bulb’s height.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) apart for a bold, natural-looking group.
  • Soil Prep: Work in garden compost and add grit if your soil is heavy to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep the soil evenly moist during active growth, especially in dry weather, but never allow bulbs to sit in waterlogged ground.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Stake stems if grown in a windy spot.
  • Feed with a high-potash fertiliser (such as tomato feed) as buds begin to form for stronger flowering.
  • Deadhead spent blooms, but leave the stem and foliage to die back naturally—this feeds the bulb for next year.
  • In containers, keep pots just moist and sheltered over winter.

Top Tip:
Plant Lilium ‘Arabian Knight’ in groups of 3–5 bulbs for maximum drama. Underplant with low perennials to shade the base, and for cut flowers remove the pollen-bearing anthers to prevent staining indoors.
