Lilium ‘Black List’ is a show-stopping lily with large, dramatic blooms in deep wine-red to near-black tones, often finished with a subtle sheen that catches the light beautifully. The flowers sit proudly on tall, strong stems and bring instant glamour to borders and patio pots alike—especially when planted in groups where the colour looks even richer. As well as being a real statement plant, lilies are fantastic for pollinators and make superb cut flowers, adding height, scent (depending on conditions) and a luxurious feel to summer arrangements.

For maximum impact, tuck ‘Black List’ through mixed borders so the stems rise up between perennials and grasses, or plant several bulbs together in a generous container for a bold, modern look. It’s a brilliant choice if you want something a little different—dark, moody colour that pairs perfectly with silvers, whites, lime greens and soft pinks.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant lily bulbs in autumn or spring, when the soil is cool and workable. Avoid planting when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.

Where to Plant:
Choose a spot in full sun or light shade with well-drained, fertile soil. Lilies like their heads in the sun and their roots cool—plant amongst low-growing perennials or add a light mulch to shade the soil. Ideal for mixed borders, cutting gardens, and large containers.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep (roughly 2–3 times the bulb’s height).
  • Spacing: Space 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) apart, or plant in small groups for a stronger display.
  • Soil Prep: Mix in garden compost to improve fertility. If soil is heavy, add grit to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep evenly moist during active growth, especially in dry spells, but avoid waterlogging. Container-grown lilies may need more regular watering.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Stake stems if grown in exposed sites.
  • Remove spent flowers, but leave the stems and foliage to die back naturally to feed the bulb.
  • Cut stems down only when the foliage has fully yellowed.
  • Mulch in winter in very cold areas, and protect new shoots from late frosts and lily beetle if needed.

Top Tip:
For the best display, plant ‘Black List’ in groups of 3–5 bulbs. Pair with silvery foliage (like Artemisia), white flowers, or lime-green companions to make the dark blooms really stand out.
