Lilium candidum, the Madonna Lily, is a timeless classic loved for its pure white, trumpet-shaped blooms and its rich, unmistakably sweet perfume. Flowering in early to mid-summer, each sturdy stem carries multiple flowers that seem to glow at dusk, making it a beautiful choice near patios, paths and doorways where the scent can be enjoyed.
This lily has a long history in cottage gardens and monastery plantings (hence “Madonna Lily”), and it remains one of the most elegant and dependable white lilies you can grow. Once settled, it will return year after year, often forming stronger clumps over time. It also makes a wonderful cut flower for the home—just a few stems can lightly perfume a whole room.

When to Plant:
Plant Lilium candidum in autumn for the best establishment, but it can also be planted in spring. For spring planting, place bulbs in the ground as soon as conditions are workable and frost pockets have passed.
Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or light shade with well-drained soil. Madonna Lily prefers a sunny spot where stems can grow strong, but it appreciates cooler roots—ideal for borders, cottage gardens, and planting among low perennials that shade the soil.
How to Plant:
Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep lightly moist while establishing, but avoid overwatering. Once growing strongly, water during prolonged dry spells—good drainage is more important than rich feeding.
Aftercare Tips:
Top Tip:
For maximum scent, plant Lilium candidum near a path, patio or doorway. If you are planting in spring, add a light mulch and keep the soil evenly moist while the bulb settles in, then let it grow on—it will reward you with beautifully perfumed blooms in summer.
