Lilium ‘Purple Dream’ is a show-stopping lily with rich purple to fuchsia-toned blooms that bring instant drama and elegance to summer planting. It flowers on tall, sturdy stems and makes a brilliant statement in borders, cutting gardens and large pots—perfect when you want that “wow” moment without any fuss. Many suppliers list it as an Asiatic lily, valued for its strong growth, excellent garden performance and suitability for cutting.

Expect flowers in mid to late summer, and if you love cut flowers, this one is a real treat—long stems, bold colour, and a very “florist-style” finish.

Pet safety note: Lilium (true lilies) are highly toxic to cats—please keep bulbs, flowers and pollen out of reach.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant bulbs in autumn (ideal) or from autumn to spring, avoiding times when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in sun or partial shade with well-drained soil. Lilies dislike sitting in winter wet, so drainage is key. Ideal for borders, cutting beds and large containers.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs around 15–20 cm deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 20 cm apart.
  • Soil Prep: Add grit to the planting hole if your soil is heavy, and mix in a little garden compost to help retain moisture during growth (but avoid waterlogging).

Watering:
Water in well after planting. Keep soil lightly moist as shoots appear and during dry spells in summer, but do not let bulbs sit in soggy ground.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Feed with a balanced fertiliser as growth starts in spring for stronger stems and better flowering.
  • Deadhead spent blooms, but leave the stems and foliage to die back naturally — this helps feed the bulb for next year.
  • In exposed spots, use a discreet stake if needed as stems get taller.

Top Tip:
For a really impressive display, plant Lilium ‘Purple Dream’ in small groups and thread through softer planting such as ornamental grasses or airy perennials — the deep purple flowers look incredible against pale greens and silvers.
