If you love lilies with real depth of colour, Lilium ‘Red Flash’ delivers in style. This striking variety produces large, richly coloured dark red blooms with dramatic blackish-red speckling, carried on tall, upright stems for a proper “wow” moment in the summer garden. Many listings describe it as an Oriental lily, meaning you can also expect noticeably fragrant flowers—perfect for planting near patios, paths, and seating areas where you’ll actually enjoy the scent.

It’s an excellent choice for borders and also performs beautifully in large pots, while the long stems make it a great cut flower for indoor arrangements.

Important note: True lilies (Lilium) are highly toxic to cats—please keep bulbs, pollen and flowers out of reach.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant bulbs in autumn (ideal) or from autumn to spring, avoiding times when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in sun or partial shade with well-drained soil. Lilies dislike sitting in winter wet, so drainage is key. Ideal for borders, cutting beds and large containers.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs around 15–20 cm deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 20 cm apart.
  • Soil Prep: If your soil is heavy, add horticultural grit to improve drainage and mix in a little garden compost for moisture-holding during summer growth.

Watering:
Water in well after planting. Keep soil lightly moist as shoots appear and during dry spells in summer, but avoid waterlogging.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Apply a mulch in spring to conserve moisture and keep the roots cool.
  • Deadhead spent flowers, but leave the stems and foliage until they yellow naturally to feed the bulb for next year.
  • Watch for common lily pests such as red lily beetle and slug/snail damage, especially on new growth.

Top Tip:
For the best impact, plant Lilium ‘Red Flash’ in small groups and thread through softer planting such as ornamental grasses or airy perennials — the deep red flowers look stunning against pale greens and silvers.
