Nerine undulata ‘Petronella’ is a real autumn showpiece, producing elegant stems topped with sparkling, wavy-edged (undulated) petals in soft to mid pink tones, often with a delicate sheen that catches the light. It’s one of those plants that makes you stop and look twice—perfect for adding late-season colour when much of the garden is starting to slow down.

Because Nerine undulata is more tender than Nerine bowdenii, it’s an excellent choice for pots and containers, so you can enjoy it outside in late summer and autumn, then move it somewhere cool, bright and frost-free over winter if needed. It’s also lovely for cutting—just a few stems in a vase look instantly special.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant nerine bulbs in late summer to early autumn for the best results. You can also plant in spring if needed, avoiding periods when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny, warm, sheltered position with well-drained soil. Nerine undulata is often best grown in pots and containers so it can be protected from hard frosts in winter. Ideal for patios, gravel-style planting, or a sunny border in mild areas.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs shallowly so the bulb is mostly covered but the neck/top sits at or just above the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 10–15 cm apart (or a little closer in pots for a fuller display).
  • Soil Prep: Use a free-draining mix (add horticultural grit to compost/soil). Avoid rich, heavily manured soil and make sure excess water can drain away.

Watering:
Water in well after planting, then keep the compost/soil lightly moist while growth is active. Avoid waterlogging. Once the foliage dies back, reduce watering and keep on the drier side during dormancy.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead spent flower heads to keep things tidy.
  • Allow foliage to die back naturally before removing — this helps feed the bulb for next year.
  • In colder areas, move pots to a cool, bright, frost-free place over winter.
  • Nerines often flower better when left undisturbed — avoid lifting or splitting unless clumps become congested.

Top Tip:
Nerines love warmth and good drainage. A pot placed in a sunny spot against a south or west-facing wall is ideal — and it makes winter protection simple if temperatures drop.
