Sedum ‘Brilliant’ is a late-season superstar that brings months of colour just when borders need it most. It forms sturdy, upright clumps of succulent grey-green leaves, then tops them with broad, flat flowerheads packed with tiny blooms that open bright rosy-pink, often deepening to richer pink tones as they mature. It’s a firm favourite for bees and butterflies, and the dried seedheads look fantastic left standing through winter for extra structure and interest.

It’s also wonderfully easy: give it sun and good drainage and it will thrive, coping brilliantly with drier conditions once established—ideal for mixed borders, gravel gardens and pots.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring or autumn, while the soil is moist and workable.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with well-drained soil. Sedum thrives in poorer soils and is drought tolerant once established. Ideal for mixed borders, gravel gardens, prairie-style planting, and pots and containers.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant so the crown is level with the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space plants 40–50 cm (16–20 inches) apart to allow clumps to develop.
  • Soil Prep: Little enrichment is needed—avoid over-fertile soil which can cause softer, floppier growth. Add grit if drainage is poor.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Once established, Sedum is low-maintenance and drought tolerant, needing only occasional watering during prolonged dry spells (especially in pots).

Aftercare Tips:

  • Leave faded flowerheads for winter structure and wildlife interest, then cut back in late winter/early spring.
  • To prevent stems flopping and to encourage a bushier plant, you can reduce stem length by up to half in late May (often called the “Chelsea chop”).
  • Divide clumps every 3–5 years in spring if needed to maintain vigour.

Top Tip:
Sedum ‘Brilliant’ looks fantastic with ornamental grasses, Rudbeckia and Salvias. The rosy-pink flowerheads also dry beautifully for autumn arrangements.
