Onion ‘Centurion’ is a reliable, high-performing variety that produces uniform, good-sized bulbs with a classic onion flavour. It’s an excellent choice for UK gardens and allotments, cropping well from spring planting and storing nicely once properly dried. Ideal for everyday cooking, ‘Centurion’ is a great all-rounder for roasting, caramelising, soups, and stews.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant onion sets in spring (typically March to April) when the soil is workable. In milder areas, you can also plant in autumn for an earlier crop, as long as conditions are not waterlogged.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny, open position with fertile, well-drained soil. Onions prefer soil that isn’t too rich in fresh manure. They’re ideal for vegetable beds, raised beds and allotments.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant sets so the tip is just showing above the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space sets 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart, with 25–30 cm (10–12 inches) between rows.
  • Soil Prep: Weed thoroughly and rake to a fine tilth. If needed, add a balanced fertiliser before planting (avoid fresh manure).

Watering:
Water after planting if the soil is dry. Once growing well, onions need little watering, but do water during prolonged dry spells. Reduce watering as bulbs swell to help them ripen.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Keep the bed weed-free so bulbs don’t have to compete for moisture and nutrients.
  • If flower stalks appear, remove them to keep energy going into bulb growth.
  • Stop watering in late summer to help bulbs mature and dry.
  • Harvest when the tops turn yellow and start to fall over, then dry thoroughly for storage.

Top Tip:
To deter birds from pulling sets, plant firmly and consider laying a light net over the bed until roots establish. For best storage, dry onions in a warm, airy place until the skins rustle.
