Heuchera ‘Obsidian’ brings instant drama to borders and pots with its sumptuous, near-black, high-gloss foliage. Forming neat, evergreen mounds, it’s a superb way to anchor planting schemes year-round, setting off silver, lime and variegated companions beautifully. In late spring to early summer, slender wands rise above the leaves with dainty, creamy-white flowers that bees adore—an elegant bonus to the foliage show. Compact and reliable (around 25–30cm tall, to 45cm in flower; spread 40–45cm), ‘Obsidian’ thrives in partial shade to sun and in well-drained, moisture-retentive soil, making it as happy in a smart container by the door as it is edging a path or weaving through a mixed border. Low-maintenance and long-lived, it keeps its colour through the seasons, deepening in brighter light without the fuss of frequent deadheading. Pair with hostas, ferns, tiarella or soft grasses for a sophisticated contrast, or use as a chic foil to spring bulbs and summer perennials. A modern classic: bold, beautiful, and effortlessly garden-worthy.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring or autumn, avoiding periods of extreme heat or frost.

Where to Plant:
Choose a spot in partial shade to full shade, though it can tolerate some morning sun. Prefers moist but well-drained soil, rich in organic matter. Ideal for mixed borders, shady edges, or underplanting with spring bulbs.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant so that the crown sits just at soil level—not too deep.
  • Spacing: Space plants 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) apart to allow for natural spreading.
  • Soil Prep: Enrich the soil with compost or leaf mould before planting.

Watering:
Water well after planting, and keep soil consistently moist (but not soggy) during establishment. Once settled, Heuchera is moderately drought-tolerant.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove any tatty leaves in early spring to keep the plant looking tidy.
  • Mulch annually in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Divide every 3–4 years in spring or autumn to rejuvenate and maintain vigour.

Top Tip:
Heuchera ‘Obsidian’ provides the perfect dark contrast to lighter spring bulbs like Narcissus and Tulipa, making it a versatile anchor plant in seasonal displays
