Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ is a brilliant, low-fuss perennial that earns its place in the garden from summer right through winter. It forms sturdy, upright clumps of fleshy green leaves topped with large, flat flowerheads that open soft pink, deepen to rosy red, and then mature to rich coppery-bronze as autumn arrives. The blooms are packed with nectar and are a real magnet for bees and butterflies, while the dried seedheads look fantastic for months, adding structure and winter interest.

Tough, drought tolerant once established, and perfect for sunny borders and pots, ‘Autumn Joy’ is ideal if you want reliable colour with minimal maintenance—just plant it, enjoy it, and let it do its thing.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring or autumn, while the soil is moist and workable.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with well-drained soil. Sedum thrives in poorer soils and is drought tolerant once established. Ideal for mixed borders, gravel gardens, prairie-style planting, and pots and containers.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant so the crown is level with the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space plants 40–50 cm (16–20 inches) apart to allow clumps to develop.
  • Soil Prep: Little enrichment is needed—avoid over-fertile soil which can cause softer, floppier growth. Add grit if drainage is poor.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Once established, Sedum is low-maintenance and drought tolerant, needing only occasional watering during prolonged dry spells (especially in pots).

Aftercare Tips:

  • Leave faded flowerheads for winter structure and wildlife interest, then cut back in late winter/early spring.
  • In spring, you can pinch out a little growth (the “Chelsea chop”) for a slightly bushier plant.
  • Divide clumps every 3–5 years in spring if needed to maintain vigour.

Top Tip:
Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ looks fantastic with ornamental grasses, Rudbeckia and Salvias. The flowerheads also dry beautifully, adding colour and texture to autumn arrangements.
