A true showstopper for the autumn garden, Colchicum 'Waterlily' produces magnificent fully double blooms in rich lilac-pink, resembling miniature waterlilies emerging directly from the soil. Its lavish, many-petalled flowers provide an extraordinary display just as most summer plants are beginning to fade, bringing welcome colour and elegance to the late-season garden.

Often referred to as the Autumn Crocus or Naked Lady, Colchicum 'Waterlily' is not a true crocus but belongs to the lily family. Its fascinating flowering habit has made it a favourite for generations, with the spectacular flowers appearing in early autumn before any foliage is visible. The broad, glossy green leaves emerge the following spring, storing energy for the next season before naturally dying back in early summer.

Introduced in the early 20th century, 'Waterlily' remains one of the most popular double-flowered Colchicums ever bred. The luxurious blooms can reach 10–15cm (4–6 inches) across, making them among the largest and most impressive autumn-flowering bulbs available.

Perfect for borders, beneath deciduous trees, gravel gardens, woodland planting and naturalising in lawns, this hardy perennial gradually forms substantial clumps that become even more spectacular with age. Its unusual flowering season makes it invaluable for extending colour well into autumn.

Please note: All parts of Colchicum are poisonous if eaten. Wear gloves when handling bulbs and keep away from children and pets.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Colchicum bulbs as soon as they arrive in late August or September. These large bulbs establish quickly and often produce flowers within a few weeks of planting.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. 'Waterlily' is ideal for borders, woodland gardens, beneath deciduous trees, gravel gardens and naturalising in lawns.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs around 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve poor soils with compost before planting and ensure good drainage, especially on heavy clay soils.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting if the soil is dry. Once established, rainfall is generally sufficient, with additional watering only needed during prolonged dry weather.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Enjoy the spectacular autumn flowers before the foliage appears.
  • Allow the broad spring leaves to die back naturally to feed the bulb for next year's display.
  • Leave bulbs undisturbed where possible, as established clumps become increasingly floriferous.

Top Tip:
Plant 'Waterlily' where its luxurious double flowers can be admired up close. It looks particularly stunning amongst low-growing ground cover or evergreen foliage, allowing the blooms to appear as if they are floating above the soil.
