Graceful, elegant and wonderfully easy to grow, Crocus pulchellus is one of the finest autumn-flowering crocuses, producing large, delicate lilac flowers beautifully feathered with deeper violet-purple veins.
Its name translates from Latin as "the beautiful crocus", a title it fully deserves. Flowering from early autumn, often before the foliage appears, the blooms bring a welcome burst of colour just as many summer-flowering plants are beginning to fade. The soft lavender-lilac flowers are enhanced by bright orange stamens and intricate darker markings, creating a refined and eye-catching display.
Native to the Balkans and western Turkey, this vigorous species is renowned for its ability to naturalise. Over time, the corms multiply steadily, forming elegant drifts beneath deciduous trees, in lawns, gravel gardens and mixed borders. The flowers are highly attractive to late-season pollinators and provide valuable nectar at a time when floral resources can be scarce.
Easy to grow, long-lived and remarkably reliable, Crocus pulchellus is an excellent choice for extending colour and interest well into autumn
