An exquisite double snowdrop of exceptional beauty, Galanthus 'Hippolyta' is renowned for its large, elegant flowers and distinctive green markings. Named after the Queen of the Amazons in Greek mythology, this outstanding cultivar is one of the finest double snowdrops, producing beautifully layered blooms that bring sophistication and charm to the late winter garden.

The graceful flowers feature broad outer white petals surrounding a full, ruffled centre of neatly arranged inner petals, each attractively marked with rich green. As the flowers mature, the green markings often become more pronounced, giving every bloom its own unique character. Carried on sturdy stems above broad grey-green foliage, the flowers are long-lasting and exceptionally eye-catching.

Belonging to the celebrated Greatorex Doubles, 'Hippolyta' was introduced by renowned snowdrop breeder Heyrick Greatorex during the 1960s and remains one of the most admired double cultivars available today. Flowering from late winter into early spring, it provides valuable nectar for early bees while brightening borders when little else is in bloom.

Perfect for woodland gardens, beneath deciduous trees, shaded borders, containers and collectors' gardens, Galanthus 'Hippolyta' gradually develops into impressive clumps, rewarding gardeners with increasingly spectacular displays each year.

A superb choice for anyone looking to grow an elegant and historic collector's snowdrop.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Galanthus bulbs in autumn (September–November), or plant "in the green" immediately after flowering in late winter or early spring for the quickest establishment.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in partial shade or dappled woodland shade with moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil. 'Hippolyta' is ideal beneath deciduous trees, in woodland gardens, shaded borders and naturalised planting schemes.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs around 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve the soil with leaf mould, compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting to retain moisture while ensuring good drainage.

Watering:
Water after planting if the soil is dry. Once established, rainfall is usually sufficient, although snowdrops appreciate moist soil during active growth.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering so the bulbs can store energy for the following year's display.
  • Lift and divide established clumps every 4–5 years after flowering if they become congested.
  • Apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould each autumn to encourage healthy growth and flowering.

Top Tip:
Plant 'Hippolyta' close to paths or entrances where its beautifully layered double flowers and intricate green markings can be admired at close range during the darkest months of the year.
