Elegant, distinctive and highly prized by snowdrop enthusiasts, Galanthus nivalis 'Viridapice' is a beautiful selection of the Common Snowdrop, instantly recognised by its striking green-tipped outer petals. Unlike the pure white flowers of most snowdrops, each graceful bloom is delicately brushed with emerald-green at the tip of every outer petal, creating an exquisite and unusual display in the late winter garden.

The name 'Viridapice' is derived from the Latin viridis meaning "green" and apex meaning "tip", perfectly describing its unique colouring. First discovered as a naturally occurring variation over a century ago, this elegant cultivar has become one of the finest and most sought-after green-marked snowdrops, combining rarity with excellent garden performance.

Flowering from late winter into early spring, the nodding white flowers are carried above neat grey-green foliage and provide an important early nectar source for bees emerging on mild days. Over time, 'Viridapice' will naturalise gently, forming attractive clumps beneath deciduous trees, woodland edges and shaded borders where its unusual markings can be appreciated at close range.

Beautiful, reliable and full of character, Galanthus nivalis 'Viridapice' is an outstanding choice for both collectors and gardeners looking to add something a little different to their spring display.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Galanthus bulbs in autumn (September–November), or plant "in the green" immediately after flowering in late winter or early spring for the quickest establishment.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in partial shade or dappled woodland shade with moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil. 'Viridapice' thrives beneath deciduous trees, in woodland gardens, shaded borders and naturalised planting schemes.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs around 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve the soil with leaf mould, compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting to retain moisture while maintaining good drainage.

Watering:
Water after planting if the soil is dry. Once established, rainfall is usually sufficient, although snowdrops appreciate moist soil while actively growing.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering so the bulbs can store energy for the following year's display.
  • Lift and divide established clumps every 4–5 years after flowering if they become overcrowded.
  • Apply a light mulch of compost or leaf mould each autumn to encourage healthy, vigorous growth.

Top Tip:
Plant 'Viridapice' close to paths, patios or entrances where its beautifully green-tipped flowers can be admired up close. It also combines wonderfully with traditional white snowdrops for subtle contrast.
