Also known as the Evening Scented Gladiolus, it is a true treasure for the late spring and early summer garden. Native to South Africa, this elegant species bears slender, arching stems adorned with softly flaring, pale cream to soft lemon flowers, often etched with a dusky bronze or greenish hue. By day it may appear modest, but as dusk falls, its magic is revealed: a hauntingly beautiful perfume wafts into the evening air, sweet and spicy, lingering long after sunset.Thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. Can be planted in either early Autumn or early spring but it really needs a sheltered site, providing protection from temperatures lower than about -5°C as they are in leaf through January and February. It’s a plant for the romantic gardener, subtle, scented, and steeped in old-world charm. Try placing near paths, doorways, or seating areas where the evening breeze will carry its unforgettable fragrance. A truly refined addition to any collection.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in autumn in areas with mild winters, or late winter to early spring in colder areas under cover. In the UK, container planting under protection from frost is recommended.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil. Ideal for pots, alpine beds, or a warm, south-facing border. Avoid waterlogged ground.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep
  • Spacing: 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) apart
  • Position: Pointed end upwards
  • Container Tip: Use a gritty, free-draining compost mix. Protect from excessive winter wet.

Aftercare:
Keep soil just moist until growth appears. Water moderately through spring and summer, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. In colder areas, lift corms in autumn and store dry, or move pots to a frost-free place.

Top Tip:Plant in groups for the best visual and scented effect, and place near a doorway or path to enjoy its sweet night-time fragrance.
