One of the most celebrated double daffodils ever introduced, Narcissus 'Sir Winston Churchill' is renowned for its exquisitely fragrant, fully double blooms and timeless elegance. An RHS Division 4 (Double Daffodil), this award-winning heirloom variety has remained a firm favourite for generations.

Each sturdy stem carries 3–5 beautifully formed flowers, each composed of layers of pristine creamy-white petals interwoven with ruffled segments of golden-yellow and soft orange at the centre. The effect is delightfully informal yet luxurious, giving every bloom the appearance of a miniature gardenia or camellia. As the flowers mature, the warm orange tones soften, adding further depth and charm to the display.

Flowering in mid to late spring, 'Sir Winston Churchill' is especially prized for its rich, sweet fragrance, widely regarded as one of the finest of any daffodil. The long-lasting blooms make exceptional cut flowers, filling the home with their intoxicating perfume, while their multi-headed stems create a spectacular display in borders, containers and cottage gardens.

Recipient of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, this vigorous and dependable variety naturalises well, returning faithfully each spring and forming increasingly impressive clumps over time.

A truly distinguished daffodil that combines elegance, fragrance and classic garden charm.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Narcissus bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, before the ground freezes and while the soil remains workable.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. 'Sir Winston Churchill' thrives in borders, cottage gardens, containers and naturalised areas beneath deciduous trees.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve poor soils with compost or well-rotted organic matter. In heavy clay soils, incorporate grit to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, water only during prolonged dry spells during active growth.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally for at least six weeks after flowering.
  • Remove faded flower heads to help direct energy back into the bulb.
  • Feed with a balanced fertiliser after flowering to encourage larger clumps and abundant blooms the following spring.

Top Tip:
Plant near doorways, seating areas or pathways where the wonderfully rich fragrance can be enjoyed every time you pass. It also makes one of the finest cut flowers for spring arrangements.
