Bold, vibrant and exceptionally reliable, Tulipa 'Van Eijk' is one of the finest Darwin Hybrid Tulips, producing enormous, perfectly formed flowers in glowing shades of rich rosy-pink that bring spectacular colour to the mid-spring garden.

Part of the world-famous Darwin Hybrid group, 'Van Eijk' has earned an outstanding reputation for its large blooms, strong weather-resistant stems and excellent perennial performance. The impressive flowers can reach over 12 cm (5 inches) across when fully open, creating an eye-catching display that stands up well to wind and rain.

Flowering in mid-spring, the luminous pink blooms make a striking statement in borders, large containers and formal bedding schemes. Their vibrant colour pairs beautifully with deep purple tulips, blue Muscari, white Narcissus and ornamental Alliums, while their long, sturdy stems make them one of the very best tulips for cutting.

Easy to grow and exceptionally dependable, 'Van Eijk' often returns for several years in well-drained soil, making it one of the best choices for gardeners looking for lasting performance as well as outstanding beauty.

A classic Darwin Hybrid that combines elegance, strength and remarkable garden presence.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Tulipa 'Van Eijk' bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, once the soil has cooled but before it freezes.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Darwin Hybrid Tulips are perfect for borders, formal bedding, large containers and cutting gardens.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 15 cm (6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit or sharp sand to improve drainage, and incorporate compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.

Watering:
Water well after planting to settle the soil around the bulbs. During spring, rainfall is usually sufficient, although containers may require occasional watering during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove faded flowers to prevent seed production.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally before removing it, enabling the bulb to store energy for the following year.
  • Avoid excessively wet soil during summer dormancy to help bulbs remain healthy.

Top Tip:
Plant in generous drifts with white Narcissus and blue Muscari for a classic spring combination, or pair with deep purple tulips for a bold, dramatic display.
