Tulipa Estella Rijnveld

Flamboyant, dramatic and quite impossible to overlook, Tulipa 'Estella Rijnveld' is a spectacular Parrot Tulip whose extraordinary flowers look almost hand-painted. Large creamy-white petals are boldly flamed, streaked and splashed with vivid raspberry-red to scarlet, with occasional touches of fresh green adding to its wonderfully exotic appearance.

The heavily fringed, twisted and feathered petals give each bloom its own individual character. As the flowers mature they become increasingly extravagant, opening remarkably wide on warm, sunny days to reveal an almost flattened, plate-like flower before folding together again as temperatures cool and evening approaches.

Flowering in late spring, 'Estella Rijnveld' is particularly effective planted where its intricate flowers can be admired at close quarters. It makes a sensational addition to patio containers and borders, while its unusual form and bold red-and-white colouring make it an outstanding cut flower.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Tulipa 'Estella Rijnveld' bulbs in autumn, from September to December. Tulips generally benefit from planting once the soil has cooled, with October and November being particularly good months where possible. Avoid planting into frozen or waterlogged ground.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny or lightly shaded, sheltered position with fertile, well-drained soil. Parrot Tulips produce particularly large, elaborate flowers, so shelter from strong winds and heavy weather will help protect the blooms. Ideal for borders, cutting gardens and patio containers.

How to Plant:

• Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 15–20cm (6–8 inches) deep, with the pointed end facing upwards.
• Spacing: Space bulbs approximately 10–15cm (4–6 inches) apart.
• Soil Prep: Improve heavy or poorly drained soil with horticultural grit and organic matter before planting. Good drainage is particularly important during winter.
• Containers: Plant in a good-quality, free-draining compost and make sure the container has adequate drainage holes.

Watering:
Water after planting if the soil is dry. Bulbs planted in the ground will normally receive sufficient moisture from autumn and winter rainfall. Check containers regularly during spring and water when the compost begins to dry, taking care not to leave the bulbs waterlogged.

Aftercare Tips:

• Feed with a high-potash fertiliser as shoots develop in spring.
• Remove faded flower heads after flowering to prevent energy being used to produce seed.
• Allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally before removing it, helping the bulb replenish its reserves.
• In heavy or particularly wet soils, bulbs can be lifted once the foliage has died back and stored somewhere cool and dry before replanting in autumn.

Top Tip:
The enormous ruffled flowers of 'Estella Rijnveld' are at their best in a sheltered position. Plant several bulbs together where you can see them close up and enjoy the extraordinary red-and-white feathering – no two blooms appear quite the same.
