An outstanding British selection, Ipheion uniflorum 'Froyle Mill' is a superb Spring Starflower producing masses of elegant, star-shaped flowers in soft lavender-blue, each delicately highlighted by a deeper blue central stripe. Free-flowering, fragrant and exceptionally easy to grow, it is one of the finest varieties for naturalising.

Discovered at Froyle Mill in Hampshire, this charming cultivar has become highly regarded for its vigour, larger flowers and prolonged flowering season. Each bloom is perfectly star-shaped, opening wide on sunny days to reveal subtle lavender-blue petals accented by deeper blue veining. The flowers are lightly sweetly scented and provide an invaluable early source of nectar for bees and other pollinating insects.

The neat, grassy foliage forms attractive clumps and carries a gentle onion scent when brushed, while the bulbs gradually multiply to create beautiful carpets of spring colour beneath deciduous trees, along pathways, in rockeries or at the front of borders.

Exceptionally reliable and remarkably low maintenance, 'Froyle Mill' thrives in both sunny and lightly shaded positions, rewarding gardeners with ever-increasing displays each spring.

A beautiful British-raised variety that combines delicate beauty with outstanding garden performance.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Ipheion bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, while the soil is still warm enough for roots to establish before winter.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. Spring Starflowers are ideal for rock gardens, borders, woodland edges, containers and naturalising beneath deciduous trees.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit or organic matter to ensure good drainage before planting.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, Ipheion tolerates dry conditions well and usually only requires watering during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
  • Leave bulbs undisturbed to naturalise and multiply.
  • Apply a light mulch of compost each autumn to maintain healthy soil.

Top Tip:
Plant in generous drifts with Crocus, Iris reticulata and miniature Narcissus for a beautiful succession of flowers that herald the arrival of spring.
