Achillea ‘Red Velvet’ is a bold, richly coloured yarrow with velvety, deep crimson-red, flat-topped flower heads held above finely cut, aromatic grey-green foliage. It’s a brilliant summer performer, loved by bees and butterflies, and ideal for adding punch to sunny borders, prairie-style planting and gravel gardens. A great cut flower (fresh or dried), it’s also wonderfully low maintenance and drought tolerant once established.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring or autumn, while the soil is moist and workable.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with well-drained soil. Achillea thrives in poorer soils and is drought tolerant once established. Ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens, wildlife-friendly planting, or gravel gardens.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant so the crown is just level with the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) apart to allow good air circulation.
  • Soil Prep: Little enrichment is needed—avoid over-fertile soil as it can cause floppy growth.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Once established, Achillea is low-maintenance and drought-resistant, needing only occasional watering during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead spent blooms regularly to encourage repeat flowering.
  • Cut back faded flower stems in late summer or autumn to keep the plant tidy.
  • Divide clumps every 2–3 years in spring or autumn to maintain vigour and prevent overcrowding.

Top Tip:
Achillea ‘Red Velvet’ is fantastic for pollinators and makes a great partner for ornamental grasses, Salvias, and Alliums. Its flat-topped flower heads also add contrast to more upright or rounded blooms in the garden.
