Alchemilla mollis, commonly known as Lady’s Mantle, is a much-loved garden staple with soft, velvety, scalloped leaves that catch raindrops like little jewels. From late spring into summer it produces airy sprays of lime-yellow flowers that float above the foliage, instantly brightening borders and weaving everything together beautifully. It’s one of those plants that makes a garden look “finished” — perfect for edging paths, filling gaps in mixed borders, and softening the front of rose beds. It’s also excellent for pollinators and a brilliant cut-and-come-again filler for bouquets.

Hardy, easy-going and wonderfully generous, Alchemilla is a great choice for Avon Bulbs & Plants customers who want maximum impact with minimal fuss.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring or autumn, while the soil is moist and workable. Container-grown plants can be planted at most times of year, avoiding frozen or waterlogged soil.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in sun or partial shade with moist but well-drained soil. Alchemilla is very adaptable and is ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens, shady edges, path borders and ground cover planting. It’s especially lovely at the front of borders and around roses.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant at the same depth as in the pot, with the crown level with the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart for a full, natural clump.
  • Soil Prep: Mix in a little compost if your soil is very light or dry, to help retain moisture.

Watering:
Water well after planting and keep watered during dry spells in the first season. Once established, Alchemilla is fairly tolerant but performs best if the soil doesn’t completely dry out for long periods.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Shear back faded flowers and tired foliage after the first flush to encourage fresh new growth and sometimes a second bloom.
  • Remove older leaves as needed to keep the plant looking tidy.
  • Divide clumps every 3–4 years in spring or autumn to maintain vigour.

Top Tip:
Alchemilla mollis is brilliant for softening the edges of borders and pairing with roses, Salvias and geraniums. If it self-seeds a little, think of it as the garden giving you freebies—simply lift and replant where you want it!
