Agapanthus

They are originally native to South Africa and their origin in the cooler climate of the Western Cape allowed for their introduction to Europe in the 17th Century. Spectacular plants that need little introduction. Good soil and as much sun as possible are the only requirements, with the added protection of winter mulching in cold districts for some forms. They can make excellent tub specimens, given plenty of water in summer. Some of these are sold as root divisions which need to be planted 3" deep in a well prepared bed with the husky firous hair marking the growing point uppermost (if it can be seen). Others are sold from plants grown by us in pots. The flowering is always better from years two and three once properly established.
