Agapanthus ‘Fireworks’ is a real summer showpiece, and our 9cm liner plants are a brilliant way to grow this striking variety on from an early stage. This beautiful African Lily produces dramatic, bicolour flower heads—deep violet-blue at the base with bright white tips—creating a sparkling, “firework” effect on tall stems above neat, strap-like foliage.

Flowering through mid to late summer, it adds height, structure and plenty of wow-factor to sunny borders, and it’s absolutely superb in patio pots once established, where it can be enjoyed up close. Pollinators love it too, so expect plenty of summer buzz around the blooms.

As young plants, these liners will need potting on and a little time to establish, but they’ll quickly grow on into strong, garden-ready plants that will reward you with a fantastic display year after year.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Pot on your 9cm liners on arrival and grow on in a sheltered spot. Plant out once the risk of hard frost has passed, or in early autumn in milder areas once plants are more established. Avoid planting into cold, waterlogged ground.

Where to Plant:
Choose a warm, sunny, sheltered position with well-drained soil. Agapanthus thrives in sunny borders, gravel gardens and patio containers. It’s happiest in a bright, open spot where it won’t sit wet over winter.

How to Plant:

  • Potting On (Recommended First Step):
Pot liners into a 1–2 litre pot using a good quality, free-draining compost. Grow on until well rooted before planting into the garden or final container.
  • Depth:
When planting out, position with the crown level with (or just below) the soil surface.
  • Spacing:
Space 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart to allow room for clumps to develop.
  • Soil Prep:
Improve drainage by adding grit to heavier soils. For containers, use a free-draining compost and ensure pots have good drainage holes.

Watering:
Water well after potting on and keep compost lightly moist while plants establish. Once planted out, water during prolonged dry spells. In containers, water regularly through summer, ensuring excess drains away.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Feed during spring and summer to encourage strong growth and flowering.
  • Allow plants to establish well in their first season—flowering will improve as plants mature.
  • In colder areas, protect young plants over winter with a dry mulch or move pots to a sheltered, frost-free spot.
  • Avoid overwatering in winter—Agapanthus dislikes sitting in cold, wet compost.

Top Tip:
Growing on liners properly is the key to success—give them a little time and warmth early on, and they’ll quickly develop into strong, flowering plants that will perform beautifully for years to come.
