Agapanthus ‘Fireworks’ is a real summer showpiece, and as a 2 litre potted plant it’s a great way to get an instant head start in the garden. This striking African Lily produces dramatic, bicolour flower heads—deep violet-blue at the base with bright white tips—creating a sparkling, “firework” effect on tall stems above neat, strap-like foliage. Flowering through mid to late summer, it adds height, structure and plenty of wow-factor to sunny borders, and it’s absolutely superb in large patio pots where it can be enjoyed up close. Pollinators love it too, so expect plenty of summer buzz around the blooms.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring once the risk of hard frost has passed, or in early autumn in milder areas. Container-grown plants can be planted at most times of year, avoiding frozen or waterlogged conditions.

Where to Plant:
Choose a warm, sunny, sheltered position with well-drained soil. Agapanthus is ideal for sunny borders, gravel gardens and patio containers. It’s happiest where it can bask in the sun and won’t sit in cold, wet ground over winter.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant at the same depth as in the pot, with the crown level with (or just below) the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart to allow room for clumps to develop.
  • Soil Prep: Improve drainage by adding grit to heavy soils. For containers, use a free-draining compost and ensure the pot has good drainage holes.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep evenly moist while establishing, then water during prolonged dry spells. In pots, water regularly through summer, allowing excess to drain away.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Feed in spring and summer to encourage flowering (especially in containers).
  • Deadhead spent blooms to keep the plant tidy and encourage further flowering.
  • In colder areas, protect crowns in winter with a dry mulch or move pots to a sheltered, frost-free spot.
  • Divide congested clumps every 3–5 years (best in spring) to maintain vigour.

Top Tip:
Agapanthus ‘Fireworks’ often flowers brilliantly in pots. Keep containers on pot feet and out of winter wet—soggy compost in cold weather is the quickest way to upset an Agapanthus!
