Astrantia ‘Diamond Sparkling Stars’ is a wonderfully elegant perennial, producing masses of delicate, starry blooms in soft white to silvery tones, often with a subtle green blush and intricate detail that looks almost glittery up close. The flowers float above tidy, deeply lobed foliage and bloom for weeks, bringing a light, airy feel to borders. It’s perfect for cottage gardens, wildlife-friendly planting, and shadier borders where you still want plenty of flower power. Astrantia is also a brilliant cut flower—fresh stems last well in the vase, and the blooms dry beautifully too.

A real “plant once, love for years” perennial that quietly steals the show.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring or autumn, while the soil is moist and workable. Container-grown plants can be planted at most times of year, avoiding frozen or waterlogged conditions.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in sun or partial shade with moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Astrantias are ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens, woodland edges and wildlife-friendly planting. They dislike drying out, so avoid very hot, dry spots.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant at the same depth as in the pot, with the crown level with the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space 35–45 cm (14–18 inches) apart to allow clumps to fill out.
  • Soil Prep: Mix in well-rotted compost to improve moisture retention and soil structure.

Watering:
Water well after planting and keep the soil evenly moist while the plant establishes. Water during dry spells, especially in summer, to keep flowering strong.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead regularly to encourage repeat flowering and keep plants looking neat.
  • Mulch in spring with compost to help conserve moisture.
  • Cut back spent stems after flowering, or leave some seed heads for gentle autumn interest.
  • Divide clumps every 3–4 years in spring or autumn to maintain vigour.

Top Tip:
Astrantia ‘Diamond Sparkling Stars’ flowers for longer if you keep the soil from drying out and deadhead often. It pairs beautifully with Salvias, Roses, Geraniums and ornamental grasses for an easy, natural look.
