Liriope muscari ‘Big Blue’ (often called lilyturf) is one of those “where-have-you-been-all-my-life?” plants for tricky spots. It forms a tidy, evergreen clump of arching, grass-like leaves, then in late summer and autumn sends up upright purple flower spikes (like little grape-hyacinth towers) that add colour just when many borders start to slow down. It’s brilliant as edging, underplanting around shrubs, weaving through shaded borders, or filling awkward gaps—smart, resilient, and very low-fuss once settled.
‘Big Blue’ typically grows to around 30cm tall with a spread up to about 45cm, making it ideal for neat ground cover without overwhelming neighbours.
When to Plant:
Plant in spring or autumn, while the soil is moist and workable. Container-grown plants can be planted most of the year, avoiding periods when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.
Where to Plant:
Choose a position in partial shade or shade for best results, although it will also grow in sun if the soil does not dry out. Liriope prefers moisture-retentive, well-drained soil and is ideal for shady borders, woodland-style planting, under shrubs, ground cover, and edging paths.
How to Plant:
Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep the soil evenly moist for the first growing season. Once established, it is fairly tolerant, but will look its best with occasional watering during prolonged dry spells.
