Lupin ‘Legendary Blue’ is a real showpiece perennial, producing tall, stately spires packed with rich blue pea-like flowers, often with crisp contrasting tips, rising above a bold clump of fresh green, palmate foliage. It’s perfect for adding that classic cottage-garden drama in early summer, and it looks fantastic planted in groups through mixed borders. As a bonus, lupins are brilliant for pollinators, bringing bees and butterflies into the garden, and the flower spikes also make excellent cut stems for a vase.
Lupins are nitrogen-fixing plants (they can help improve soil health over time), and with regular deadheading they often give a second flush of flowers later in the season. They’re a great choice for Avon Bulbs & Plants customers who want big colour, height and impact—without needing complicated care.
When to Plant:
Plant in spring or autumn, while the soil is moist and workable. Container-grown plants can be planted most of the year, avoiding periods when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.
Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun (best flowering) or light/partial shade with well-drained soil. Lupins prefer soil that is not waterlogged in winter. Ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens, and cutting gardens.
How to Plant:
Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep the soil evenly moist while the plant establishes. Once settled, water during prolonged dry spells, especially when in bud and flower.
Aftercare Tips:
Top Tip:
Lupins look best planted in groups and partnered with classics like delphiniums, roses, foxgloves and ornamental grasses. For longer flowering, keep deadheading and give a deep water during dry spells.
